Back to Work Case Study — Marketplace

Neighbors Trailer

A two-sided marketplace connecting trailer owners with renters — list, discover, book, and pay, all inside one app.

Overview

A marketplace with two very different users to serve

Neighbors Trailer sits in an unglamorous but very real niche: people who own a trailer they're not using every day, and people who need one for a weekend. The app had to work equally well for both sides — simple enough for an occasional owner to list a trailer in minutes, and trustworthy enough for a renter to book from a stranger nearby.

I built the mobile app end to end, from the listing and discovery flows through to booking, messaging, and payments.

The Challenge

Two-sided trust, solved with product design

Trailer owners had no easy way to list their trailer and reliably get paid for rentals. Renters, on the other side, had no trustworthy way to find and book one nearby without a string of phone calls and cash-in-hand arrangements. Both sides needed confidence that the transaction — and the trailer — would show up as promised.

The Approach

Listings, discovery, and payments, tied together

The app is built in React Native with Firebase powering listings, user profiles, and real-time data sync. Discovery is map-based — renters search by location and radius rather than scrolling a flat list — and the booking flow checks availability against the owner's calendar before confirming a request, to avoid double-bookings.

Payments are integrated end to end, covering the full loop from a renter's booking request through to the owner's payout, so neither side has to move the transaction off-platform.

Key Features

What's inside

  • Listing management for trailer owners
  • Map-based search & discovery for renters
  • In-app booking calendar with availability checks
  • Secure end-to-end payments and payouts
  • Ratings and reviews for both sides
  • Push notifications for booking updates
The Outcome

A complete rental lifecycle, live on both stores

Neighbors Trailer is live on the App Store and Google Play, handling the full rental lifecycle from listing through booking to payout — the kind of unglamorous plumbing that makes a two-sided marketplace actually trustworthy to use.

Building a marketplace or two-sided platform?

Booking flows, payments, and trust mechanics are exactly the kind of problem I like solving.
